“Don’t forget that you need outside support, too. Lean on your friends now, just as they lean on you in their times of trouble. Don’t hesitate to ask them for the time and support you and your daughter need.”
Bone-Deep Love
“When I began writing Our Last Best Shot, I had an inclination to minimize the significance of parents in the lives of adolescents and to emphasize the importance of other adults. But the kids I interviewed kept leading me right back to their families. One day I listened to a girl rant about her mother for more than an hour, and then I watched her run straight into her mom’s arms for a hug as soon as she returned home. Despite appearances to the contrary, our daughters’ love for us is bone-deep. Even in the hardest times, that love can lift us up.”
