Allowing a girl to become the family caretaker is not acceptable. Shortening her childhood is not an option. The girls we love get plenty of messages that they need to give up their dreams in order to make others happy. We dads must counter that message, not send it.
Most of us fathers are somewhat mystified by our daughters’ transition from girlhood into womanhood. As their bodies start to change, our daughters need more privacy.
Eventually fathers need to let go and let their independent daughters take care of problems that arise.
It isn’t surprising that we guys—dads, uncles, grandfathers and brothers—tease the most. Generally, we tease because we aren’t raised to speak the language of emotions and say what’s in our hearts.
